Aerhart Station: Characters

Mongoose (Lieutenant Lori Delancey)

Small, fierce, and picks fights with things that she really shouldn't mess with (superior officers, for the most part). Mongoose's call sign was bestowed on her by her commanding officer, Kestrel. She'd wanted something a bit less cute and furry, but she wasn't given a choice in the matter. Although she's only been with her squadron a few weeks, the name has stuck and she's grown used to it. Lieutenant Delancey is a war orphan who's lived her entire life on the station. An unexceptional student and something of a troublemaker, she falsified her birth information in order to enter the service a year younger than her actual age of eligibility. She's made it clear that her ambition is to become a combat pilot, but so far she's been passed up, and her flying has been restricted to unarmed shuttlecraft.

Kestrel (Captain Anthony Ramirez)

Squadron commander for one of Aerhart Station's four battle wings, Captain Ramirez has seen more than his share of action. He's crashed three fighters, been stranded behind enemy lines twice, and lived through it all. A seasoned veteran, the captain runs his unit with smooth efficiency and a level of calm in the face of danger that has gotten him branded as "scary as hell" by his fellow officers. It's also earned the trust of the soldiers and pilots under his command. Although few would believe it, Kestrel got his call sign in much the same way the Mongoose got hers, several years back under his first squadron commander (now long dead). Although he's mastered the job of command quickly and readily, Kestrel remembers the days when he was the loose cannon of his squadron.

Fate (Lieutenant Cassandra Faith Murdoch)

Shuttle crew commander and weapons specialist Cassie Murdoch plans on retiring from the service to become a history teacher. A brilliant strategist with a seemingly endless knowledge of trivia, Fate would rather settle a disagreement in a debate than a fistfight. When it comes time for battle, she has displayed a remarkable skill at outmaneuvering enemies and locating their weak points. Her call sign was originally a play on the sound of her middle name, although Cassie enjoys the mythological connection that it has to her first name as well.

Outsider (Lieutenant Mitchell Evans)

In the last year, communications with other outposts has dwindled to almost nothing, and there have been fewer and fewer new arrivals from off-station. Lieutenant Evans arrived in a long-range shuttle six months ago, and spent his first weeks on Aerhart Station being carefully debriefed by members of the Defense Command. He was assigned to Captain Ramirez's squadron, where he remains something of an enigma. He claims to be under orders not to reveal what he knows about the situation in the other colonies, but he occasionally drops cryptic hints and bits of information, most of which indicate that the humanity's situation is even more dire that is generally believed. Lieutenant Evans remains aloof and unapproachable, but he had proved to be a skilled and capable pilot and soldier.
